Describes a project in which the TRL driving simulator was used to examine the effectiveness of a range of signing and marking measures designed specifically for application on trunk roads. The final part of the paper illustrates two examples where traffic calming principles have been or will be applied on arterial roads. The driving simulator provides a virtual validation space to test or manipulate factors that affect the driving experience, performance of the driver, the road environment and vehicle technology.
